What to do in your gap year?

Anyone taking a gap year either between school and university or before beginning a full-time job after university or college has asked themselves this question. What to do in your gap year is something that could change the rest of your life. The decisions you make now often influence how everything unfolds in front of you. Being able to teach English will give you many options.

Travel is one thing that people often want to do in their gap year. One way to fund your travels and work your way around the world is to teach English. Teaching English is a skill that is much in demand everywhere in the world. Even once you get home, there are often jobs teaching English to immigrants and newcomers to your home country. Getting an online TEFL certificate is the first step to being free to travel the world. Want to live in Thailand? Maybe go to Costa Rica? How about the beautiful city of Prague? All of these are easily accomplishable with a sense of adventure and a TEFL certificate.

Once you are qualified you will be able to go to a country of your choosing and literally turn up to schools and language centers and potentially be working within days or even hours. On of our recent students applied for a job at a language school in Thailand and he was working within 30 minutes as a teacher had called in sick!

Volunteering is also a great way to see the world and do some good while you are travelling. There are many worthwhile places to volunteer, NGOs (non-governmental organizations), temples, orphanages, hill-tribe villages just to name a few. A word of warning though, never pay to volunteer. There are many unscrupulous businesses and websites that offer volunteering as a paid service. They are just aiming to make money off your kindheartedness. With that being said, even if you are going to volunteer to teach English, your students still deserve a good teacher; someone who knows what they are doing. That’s why even if you are going to volunteer, getting trained first is always the smart option, for you and more importantly for your students. The confidence you will gain by knowing the techniques and methods behind what makes a good teacher and a good lesson will stand you in good stead. Your students will also benefit by getting the best teacher they can have.

Online Teacher Training

You can accomplish this by doing your teacher training online. The great thing about doing your TEFL certificate online is that it fits into your schedule. You can work at your own pace and place! You can get confident in the techniques and methodologies, so it becomes second nature once you are in your own classroom.

So, “What to do in your gap year?”, I say travel the world and get paid doing it. I’ve never met someone who’s regretted travelling and teaching as it expands your horizons (literally) and you meet some amazing people and witness fantastic places along the way.
